WELCOME TO XANTHI!
Xanthi, also known as “Lady Ruler of Thrace” and “The city of a thousand colors”, is the
capital of the regional section with the same name, built at the foothills of Achladovouno
and crossed by Kosynthos river. Its beauty is manifest everywhere, but especially in Old
Town, at the northern part of Xanthi, which is the historical core of the city. A walk in its
alleys suffices to engross you with the imposing, atmospheric mansions, the lively colors
and also the natural beauty of the Thracian landscape! The city was built after 1829. That
year strong earthquakes completely destroyed the previous settlement and the city was
rebuilt on the ruins, around the churches that probably existed since the era of the Byzan-
tine Xantheia, which was the ancient name of Xanthi. Every occasion is good for a journey
to Xanthi, but March is certainly the ideal season, as then the entire city “dances” to the
rhythm of its legendary carnival!
