GROVEL TO THE HOLY TEMPLE OF THE ASSUMPTION
OF THE MOTHER OF GOD
n Kalambaka you will find a lot of small temples and chapels from the
post-byzantine era with significant murals, but the temple of the Assumption
is one of the must-visit monuments. It is located in the Old Town and was
restores between the 10th and the 11th century on the ruins of the old Chris-
tian Basilica. Many ancient parts of sculptures are of particular interest, such
as the unique in Greece marble Ambo, murals dating from the 12th and the
16th century, as well as the mosaic floor. Equally impressive are the bell-tow-
er of the temple and the gold bullion of Emperor Andronicus III Paleologos.
ΠΡΟΣΚΥΝΉΣΤΕ ΣΤΟΝ ΙΕΡΌ ΝΑΌ ΚΟΙΜΉΣΕΩΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΌΚΟΥ
Στην Καλαμπάκα θα βρεθείτε μπροστά από πολλούς μικρούς ναούς και
ξωκλήσια μεταβυζαντινής εποχής με αξιόλογες αγιογραφίες, αλλά ο ναός
της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου είναι από τα must visit αξιοθέατα. Βρίσκεται
στην παλιά πόλη και ανηγέρθη μεταξύ 10ου και 11ου αιώνα στα ερείπια
παλαιοχριστιανικής βασιλικής. Ξεχωριστό ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν
πολλά αρχαία τμήματα ανάγλυφων, ο μοναδικός στην Ελλάδα μαρμάρινος
Άμβωνας, τοιχογραφίες του 12ου και 16ου αιώνα και το ψηφιδωτό δάπε-
δο. Εντυπωσιάζουν επίσης το κωδωνοστάσιο του ναού και το χρυσόβου-
λο του αυτοκράτορα Ανδρονίκου Γ’ Παλαιολόγου.
