MONASTERIES OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
• The convent of St. Stephen, the easiest accessible and the first the visitors meet when they arrive. (Dai-
ly except Mondays 09:30-13:00 & 15:00-17:00)
• The monastery of Metamorfosi (the Transfiguration of Jesus) or “Megalo Meteoro”, perched on the
peak of the highest rock. This is the oldest, largest and most important monastery in Meteora. High-
lights are the old commons, the library, the woodcraft items, etc. (Winter opening hours: Fri. till Mon.,
09:00-14:00)
• The holy convent of Roussanos, built on a vertical, steep rock (daily except Wednesday, 09:00-14:00)
• The holy monastery of the Holy Trinity. This is where scenes of the James Bond movie “For your eyes
only” (1981) and the modern TV show “Tatouaz” (2018) were made. (Daily except Thursday, 10:00-
16:00)
• The monastery of Aghios Nikolaos of Anapafsas. In the monastery is saved the small chapel of St.
Antonius with remnants of the murals from the 14th century. (Daily except Friday, 09:00-16:00)
• The Holy Monastery of St. Varlaam. The access to the holy site is made through sculpted stairs on the
rock with an interstitial bridge. (Daily except Thursday & Friday, 09:00-15:00)
