LITHEOS RIVER The gem of Trikala and a landmark of outstanding beauty. The banks of Litheos, an affluent of Pinios river, are adorned by tall trees (plane trees, wild chestnut trees, etc.), creating a unique green lung. Actually, this is the only river of this extent and length that crosses the center of a Greek town. Despite the fact that the river divides the town in two sides, the riverfront is connected with a thirteen bridges, half of which are used exclusively for pedestrians. According to Strabo, the God of Medicine, Aesculapius was born close to the river, and his statue stands majestically over the bridges. The last bridge was constructed in 1886 in France. 15
