In the entire Prefecture of Serres gastronomy
holds a prominent place and the visitor has
many choices. It is certainly renowned for
its buffalo meat production. Besides, 90%
of the total Greek production of this kind
of meat comes from the broader area of
Strymonas! Water buffalos came to Greece
a few centuries ago, when Xerxes transferred
his army’s supplies across the river. These
animals saved the local populations at hard
times of poverty, while later, with meat
imports, they passed to obscurity. Today
they fill once again the plain of Nestos and
the area of Kerkini. This is the reason why
you will find buffalo meat in many taverns

and restaurants of the prefecture, cooked in
many ways. The consumption doesn’t stop
at the meat itself, as you will also find many
other buffalo products (kavourmas, salami,
smoked) and also buffalo milk products (from
trachanas to ice-cream and from dairy to
butter and biscuits!) The taste palette of the
area includes many more, such as game, lake
fish, pies and local meat.
