The culinary wealth of Rhodes is based on
three products of the Mediterranean Diet:
wheat, olive and wine, the treasures of
the sea and everything mother nature has
to offer. The new horticulture like arugula
and avocado, as well as meat cooked in
traditional and modern ways, have an
important position. The kitchen of Rhodes
has its roots in the past with dishes that
have been lost in the depths of time, but it
also has to offer dished that remain alive
to this day. If you find a menu including the
following, just say yes! Try Avranies (wild
asparangus), Karavoloi (snails) stew, “kou-
louria” (type of pasta), “lakani” (beef sirloin
in tomato sauce), “matsi” or “plasta” pasta,
tsitsigia, pitaroudia, namely pies with chick-
peas, tsouvras (tomato soup with onion)
and all sorts of fish and seafood. Very im-
portant are also the chapter of sweets, with
the melekounia (type of pasteli - sesame
seed candy), amygdalota, katimeria (bagels
with honey) and takakia (sweet delicacy
with the flesh of walnut). Rhodes is also
famous for its honey, pasta and cereals, as
well as the local wines and the renowned
“souma” (Tsipoudo from Rhodes).
