THE ORDER OF THE KNIGHTS IN RHODES
Τhe Knights of Saint John, just like many other tribes that settled in Rhodes,
are said to have arrived on the island from Cyprus, seeking a new shelter
for their Order. In fact, in order to conquer Rhodes, they asked for financial
assistance from England and France. In 1306, they invaded into the island with
the assistance of infidel rebels, after having gathered their forces in Limassol,
Cyprus, and then they boarded at Makri. Until they conquered the island
totally, in 15th August 1309, it took them 4 years, after they had initially
conquered the coastline of Rhodes. After the occupation of Rhodes, the
Knights of Saint John take the name «Knights of Rhodes» and the magistrate
is named «Grand Master» - «Magnus Magister». The Grand Master and his
council live in the palace. From 1309 to 1522, 19 Masters rule in Rhodes.
