They are dances with undisguised men choosing their dancing partner without knowing her, since women were a black domino and a mask. The first carnival floats appeared in the 1870s, while the brand new “Apollon” municipal theatre of that time was granted for the organisation of the first public carnival dances. In the first decade of the 1900s people from all social classes oparticipated in the carnival and this is when the egg-fight was established, with wax eggs filled with confetti, which is considered as the precursor of the current chocolate fight. During the German occupation and the Greek civil war, the carnival celebration stapped and started again in 1951, with “Orpheas” and “Patraiki Mantolinata” music groups being the leaders of tge organisation. Since 1952, the carnival is organised by the Municipality of Patras, while in 1966 a new group game, the “Hidden Treasure”, popped up.
