THE RIO CASTLE The Rio Castle, also known as Kastelli of Patra, is located near the Rio-Antirrio bridge. It was constructed in 1499 by sultan Bayezid ΙΙ on the remnants of the ancient temple of Poseidon on the side of Rio. Along with the castle of Antirrio across it, they used to control the sea pass. In time, the castle was occupied by conquerors who left their indelible mark to its building style. On the one side, the castle has a wide trench with sea water as it is connected with the sea. In the trench there are two bastions on the outside connected with the main castle through stone bridges, while it has two gates. The castle is open to visitors and it hosts cultural events.
