The inside of the old temple of St. Andreas
HOLY TEMPLE OF ST. ANDREAS OF PATRAS Before you even enter the
temple, its majestic outside causes awe and admiration, and this peaks after
you get into. The Cathedral of St. Andreas is identified with the town, being
its symbol and an important pilgrimage for the Orthodox Christians from all
over the world. It was built in 1908 in the centre of the town right next to the
equally majestic old temple constructed in 1836 at the site where Apostle
Andreas martyred. It is considered the biggest and most glorious temple in
the Balkan region and one of the biggest temple in Europe. In the main dome
that is almost 50m tall, there is a gold-plated cross and twelve smaller ones,
a symbol of Jesus and his 12 Apostles, while the relics of St. Andreas are kept
inside the temple. Apart from a place of major religious importance, the
temple is also a work of high cultural and historical value, and is definitely
among the most important landmarks of the area. Today operate both
temples, while every Sunday, a wake is held in the Old Temple.
