Russia until Asia Minor and Northern Africa,
so a lot of students started to arrive from
all parts. When Makarios died, in 1737, his
friend and partner Gerasimos Vyzantios
continued his work. From 1902 it started to
operate as a theological school and in 1907
it was forced to be transferred to Samos due
to financial problems, where it remained
open for w few years, until it closed. Its
action continued after the liberation of the
island in 1947. Then, it was reconstructed
again, just a few meters from its initial
position. In October 1st 1947, took place
the celebrations for the inauguration of the
School and the sanctification for the start
of the lessons. Among its graduates there
are many university professors, teachers
of the Nation, archpriests, patriarchs and
metropolitans, writers, as well as important
personalities of the political scene of the
count ry. The School operates to this
day, of course with a reduced number of
students. It has been honoured multiple
times by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the
Athens Academy and UNESCO for its
invaluable contribution to the Church and
the Nation.
ΒΑΠΤΙΣΤΉΡΙΟ
Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, εκεί βάπτιζε
ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Θεολόγος τους Πα-
τμίους και επίσης εκεί στεκόταν ο Άγιος
όταν έστειλε στο βυθό της θάλασσας
τον μάγο Κύνωπα. Βρίσκεται στη Σκάλα,
πλησίον της παραλίας του λιμανιού όπου
σώζονται τα ερείπια των κτισμάτων που
χρησιμοποιούνταν κατά τους Χριστιανι-
κούς χρόνους, ως «βαπτηστήριο».
BAPTISTRY
According to tradition, this is where
Saint John the Theologian baptized the
Patmians and where the Saint stood
when he banished the magician Kynops
(or Kenepsi) to the bottom of the
sea. It is located in Skala, close to the
port’s waterfront where there are the
preserved ruins of the buildings that
during the Early Christian period were
used as a “baptistry”.
