THE HOLY MONASTERY OF AGHIOS IOANNIS THEOLOGOS
(ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST)
Surrounding Chora, it looms over the whole island. According to archaeological findings, it
was built in the place where the ancient temple of Artemis used to be, and it is surrounded
by an irregular rectangular defensive enclosure dating from the late 11th century until the
17th. In the 12th century the chapels of the Virgin Mary and St. Christodoulos were added.
Within the Monastery there are the chapels of St. Vasilios, St. Nicholaos, Timios Stavros,
