THE HOLY CAVE OF THE APOCALYPSE
A landmark not only for Patmos, but for Christianity universally as well. Located between
Skala and Chora (the capital), the Cave was the shelter of the disciple of Jesus, John in 95
A.D., when the Emperor Domitianos exiled him to Patmos, punishing him for declaring
the Word of God in Ephesus. According to the Christian tradition, in the exile, the rock was
cleaved in three small clefts symbolising the Holy Trinity and the voice of God was heard,
dictating the Holy Book of the Apocalypse. In 1999, the Cave was declared a World Cultural
Heritage Site by UNESCO. (Τ. +30 22470 31234, can be visited daily from 08:00)
