SKALA THE ONLY PORT OF PATMOS A place of particular beauty, a picturesque tourist center and the only port of Patmos where the ships drop anchor. It is the point of departure for many excursions to many beaches and attractions and trips to the islands of Arki and Marathi. This is the most densely populated settlement with about 1.400 permanent residents and home to plenty of tourist shops, banks, restaurants, taverns, hotels and rooms to let. Moreo- ver, Skala is a very vivid place and in the nighttime, bars and hangouts with live music attract a number of visitors, while its cosmopolitan character is boosted by dozens of sailing crafts that anchor in the Marina. Its irresistible charm is also thanks to the intense architectural features dating from the Italian occupation, with the so-called “Italian building” at the dock as the top example. In the area, the visitor will find the Baptistry of St. John the Evangelist and the ancient Acropolis in Kasteli. 14
