SECRETS DID YOU KNOW THAT.. l It has now been approved the direct sale to the Municipality of Nafplio of the historic building of the 19th century which once housed the first pharmacy of the free Greek state, owned by Bonifati Bonafin an Italian philhellene, who was the one that embalmed the body of the murdered governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias. l The famous sculpture known as the “Lion of the Bavarians” was commissioned by Ludwig, father of King Otto, in memory of the Bavarian soldiers of the royal guard who were victims of the typhus epidemic that spread in the city (1833). That year, Otto himself, the first king of Greece, had disembarked in Nafplion. l The current Town Hall is a 1857 building and was originally built to house the High school of the city. The High school of Nafplio was the second, after the one of Ermoupolis, that was established after the liberation of our country from the Ottomans,. l The Gate of the Land (today only part of it survives) was once the only entrance of the city from the land. The gate closed at sundown, so anyone who did not come back on time was left outside ... crying his heart out! l The church of St. George is the first cathedral of the Greek state since its liberation. There we can find the tombs of great personalities such as war hero Dimitrios Ypsilantis and bishop Palaion Patron Germanos.
