FILELLINON SQUARE Located in front of the harbor, the square is surrounded by important buildings such as the Cus- toms House, Church of Aghios Nikolaos, and a 19th-century, two-storey neoclassical building which houses the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies. Its name is due to the monument at the center, which was erected in 1903 in the memory of the French Philhellenes (meaning friends of Greece) who fought and died for the liberation of Greece. Tip: In recent years, the bust of Mando Mavrogenous was placed there, a heroine of the Greek War of Independence who lived in Nafplion from 1824 to 1831. 29
