CASTLE OF AGHIA MAVRA It is the first landmark that the visi- tor sees upon arriving in Lefkada. At the entrance of the island, near Amoglossa, this impressive medieval building, in the shape of an irregular heptagon, looms, exemplar of the fortification architecture of that era. It occupies an area of 25,000 ​​ sq.m. and was besieged 12 times during the seven centuries of its existence. It has three defensive lines, seven bastions, and three outer walls. The first wall was built in 1300 by the Venetian ruler John, Count of Orsini who received Lefkada as a dowry ...
