τοπικής κοινωνίας. Οι εκδηλώσεις γίνονται
συνήθως το δεύτερο δεκαπενθήμερο κάθε
Αύγουστο, αμέσως μετά τις Γιορτές Λόγου
και Τέχνης. Το 1964, το νησί έζησε μια εξαι-
ρετική στιγμή όταν τραγούδησε η κορυφαία
Μαρία Κάλλας πραγματοποιώντας την τε-
λευταία της εμφάνιση στο ελληνικό κοινό.
Every August, Lefkada opens its arms and
welcomes traditional dance groups from all
around the world. The streets of the city are
flooded with colorful costumes and smiles
and the whole island lives in intense rhythms.
The festival began in 1962 and has never
stopped since then with the enthusiastic
involvement of the local community. Events
are usually held every year in the second
fortnight of August, just after the Festivals
of Speech and Art. In 1964, the island expe-
rienced an exceptional moment when the
great Maria Callas sang, making her last ap-
pearance to the Greek audience.
ΦΙΛΑΡΜΟΝΙΚΉ | PHILHARMONIC
Αν και η Κέρκυρα είναι ξακουστή για τις φι-
λαρμονικές της, η Λευκάδα δεν έχει να ζηλέ-
ψει σε τίποτα. Έχει την αρχαιότερη (μετά την
Κέρκυρα) φιλαρμονική της Ελλάδας (1850),
έχοντας αποσπάσει πολλές και σπουδαίες
διακρίσεις. Το δραστήριο σωματείο, συμμε-
τείχε το 1896 στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες
της Αθήνας, το 1906 στη Μεσολυμπιάδα και
μέχρι σήμερα έχει λάβει μέρος σε πάμπολ-
λες εκδηλώσεις σε πολλά μέρη της Ελλάδας
και του εξωτερικού. Στη φιλαρμονική, που
απαρτίζεται από 1000 μέλη, λειτουργεί μου-
σική σχολή, μπάντα, μπαντίνα και μουσικά
σύνολα.
Although Corfu is famous for its philharmon-
ics, Lefkada can boast about its own as well.
It has the oldest (after Corfu) Philharmonic
of Greece (founded in 1850), which has won
many and great distinctions. The active soci-
ety participated in the 1896Athens Olympic
Games, in the1906 Mid-Olympic Games
and has participated in numerous events in
various parts of Greece and abroad. The Phil-
harmonic boasts 1000 members, operates
a music school, a band, a bandina and music
ensembles.
