LAGOON On either side of the bridge linking Lefkada with Akarnania there is one of the remarkable wetlands of the Ionian Sea. It has particular ecological value as it is characterized by the RAMSAR Convention as a wetland of international impor- tance. Particularly beautiful, the lagoon in the town of Lefkada is of great inter- est as a migratory bird station. Here you will find many and rare species of birds, such as pelicans, flamingos, swans, herons, lapwings, certain species of gulls and geese. The lagoon is also home to a variety of fish while within it there is the “ivari”, that is a fish farm with traditional wickerwork where the fish live.
