It is certainly renowned for its buffalo meat production. Besides, 90% of the total Greek production of this kind of meat comes from the broader area of Strymonas! Water buffalos came to Greece a few centuries ago, when Xerxes transferred his army’s supplies across the river. These animals saved the local populations at hard times of poverty, while later, with meat imports, they passed to obscurity. Today they fill once again the plain of Nestos and the area of Kerkini.
