PROUSSOS Locals call it “ Broussos ” and it is located 900 meters above the sea level , 50 km away from Agrinio and 33 km away from Karpenissi . During the last years , the village has entered powerfully the tourist map of the area , thanks to its unrivalled beauty and the surrounding attractions , while the wider area is mesmerizing due to its natural beauty . The village is fully identified with the very famous pilgrimage site , the Proussos monastery , located in close distance , within a deep awe-inspiring gorge . The monastery of Panagia Proustiotissa ( celebrating in August 23rd ), is a spiritual and pilgrimage center of the wider area , with thousands of visitors pouring in to worship the holy idol of Panagia ( Virgin Mary ), an artwork created by Luke the Evangelist . The visitors usually stop at the frequently photographed “ Klidi ” area , where the road literally penetrates the rock . A bit further away , you will find the place called “ Patimata tis Panagias ” ( the Footsteps of Virgin Mary ), from where the holy idol is said to have passed , and they stand out on the rock due to the hundreds of pledges .
