E ast F ragista – W est F ragista – T ripotamos – M onastery of T atarna
In this route, that ends at the imposing Monastery of Tatarna, you will start from East
Fragista, one of the most historical and old villages of Roumeli, with a past interwoven
with the course of the entire Evrytania. After 3.3 km you will meet West Fragista, built
at an altitude of 710 m. From there start for Tripotamos of Evrytania (also known as
Tatarna until 1928). You will get there in about 23.7 km. In this village there is also the
monastery of Tatarna, near the location of an old Byzantine and historical monastery
that offered a lot not only to Orthodoxy but also to the struggle for national regener-
ation. It was a refuge for many rebels (Katsantonis, Diplas, Karaiskakis), it was destroyed
many times, it was reconstructed by King Otto and, finally, it collapsed during the great
landslide of 1963, after the completion of the artificial lake of Kremasta. The new
monastery preserves many relics, among them the oil lamp that rebel Katsantonis had
offered as an oblation.
