Panaratos is a folk theatrical play of Apokria, presented in Karpenissi since the beginning of the 20th century. At first it had a small dura- tion and was presented at the nearby villages’ squares or at the crossroads of the town. (Later it was staged at the central square, with the introduction of timely comments and modernist elements). The plot of the play is based on “Erofili”: Panaretos, the son of the king of Thrace falls in love with the king’s daughter, unfortunate- ly the girl is destined for another husband, so Panaretos decapitates while the girl commits suicide. The resurrection of the dead was identified with spring, which begins after the Carnival.
