The annual festival of Apokria take places in
Karpenissi, offering a large dose of fun and
entertainment, along with the authentic
Evritanian hospitality.
Dance and fun, with events especially
planned for all ages! The locals and the
visitors have the opportunity to celebrate
the Carnival and escape from the daily
routine with celebrations, concerts and the
representation of traditional customs and
events. Of course, the “Panaratos” carnival
folk show and the representation of a «Gypsy
Wedding» in the square of Karpenissi on Clear
Monday are not to be missed!
Panaratos is a folk theatrical play of Apokria,
presented in Karpenissi since the beginning of
the 20th century. At first it had a small dura-
tion and was presented at the nearby villages’
squares or at the crossroads of the town.
(Later it was staged at the central square, with
the introduction of timely comments and
modernist elements).
The plot of the play is based on “Erofili”:
Panaretos, the son of the king of Thrace falls
in love with the king’s daughter, unfortunate-
ly the girl is destined for another husband, so
Panaretos decapitates while the girl commits
suicide. The resurrection of the dead was
identified with spring, which begins after the
Carnival.
