THE NEW FORTRESS On Aghios Markos hill, northwest of the town, looms the Venetian New Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built between 1570 and 1645 to reinforce the fortification of the Venetians, as the Old Fortress wasn’t considered sufficient. Its gate is adorned with the Lion of St. Mark, the emblem of the Venetian Republic. TIP: Enjoy the best panoramic views of the town. Unfortunately, at the moment the New Fortress remains closed to the public. DAILY 09:00-15:30 EXCEPT SATURDAY & SUNDAY 23
