THE OLD FORTRESS The so-called “Fortezza” is the original fortress and trademark of the city that played a vital role in the protection of Corfu after the destruction of Palaiopolis in the 6th century A.D. The additions continued until its final formation in 1588 by the Venetians. Cross its gate (separated from the mainland by the trench of Kontra Fossa), pass through its galleries and climb to the highest point to marvel at the panoramic views of Spianada and Liston. The former barracks and prisons have now been replaced by the offices of the Byzantine Antiquities department, the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University and the Archives of the State! TIP: Make a stop at the Old Fortress Café, overlooking the neoclassical temple of St. George! KΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΆ 08:30-15:30 (ΧΕΙΜ.) 08:00-20:00 (ΘΕΡ.)
