ACHILLEION One of the most famous attractions in the island located 10km from the centre of Corfu in Gastouri, is the palace of the Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) of Austria. It was built between 1889 and 1892 as she wanted to find a retreat to recover from the loss of her son. The next resident of Achilleion was Kaiser Wilhelm II, who bought it after she died. As its name suggests, the mansion was dedicated to the mythical hero of the Trojan War, Achilles. Impressive gardens, a remarkable collection of sculptures inspired by Greek mythology and world-class works of art are some of its hidden gems! Today, it operates as a museum. ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΆ 09:00-18:00.
