SAINT DAVID MONASTERY It is one of the most beautiful and historically significant monasteries in Evia, with a large number of pilgrims visiting it from every part of Greece. It is located in Northern Evia at the bottom of Kavallaris mountain and in a height of 927 meters, about 93 km from Chalkida. Around and outside the Monastery there are many chapels in memory of Saints, while the Monastery is known for the religious properties of an old monk called Iakovos, who was for many years and until the end of his life the abbot. Although the date the monastery was built remains unknown, it is undoubted that it existed before 1500. Saint David built the Monastery around 1550 on top of the ruins of an older temple damaged by the Turks in 1470 after they occupied the island of Evia. The Turks were also those who destroyed it again in 1824, in reprisal for the monks that participated in the Greek Revolution in 1821. in 1877 it was restored. The relics of the Saint, along with his censer and stole are kept in the Temple of the Monastery. The basement houses a small temple with murals and dating from the 17th century. About 1 km from the Monastery there is “Aghioneri”. According to the tradition, Saint David hit the rock with his wand and a lot of thermal water started to stream. The monastery celebrates on 6th August, in the day of the Transformation of the Saviour and on 1st November, the day in memory of St. David. Dont miss: In the North of the Monastery, in about 4 km, you will find Drimonas village, with the waterfalls of the same name, a mesmerizing spectacle. Dont’ forget to visit this place! 91
