Εγγλεζονήσι (ή Κτυπονήσι) | Englesonisi (or “Ktiponisi”) Τύμβος του Σαλγανέα | The Tomb of Salganeas Spartian King Leonidas. The Persian fleet, sailing through the north Gulf of Evia, coundn’t see the Euripus Strait and the town of Chalkida and they thought that Salganeas had led them to a trap and killed him. However, as they continued to sail through the peninsula, they found the Euripus Strait and realised their mistake. Then, Xerxes the Persian King ordered his fleet to bury the unfairly killed man with honours and make a tomb for him. Today, the Tomb of Salganeas is an artificial hill located in the foothills of mountain Messapio (today called Ktipas) between the Municipalities of Drossia and Loukissia of the Municipality of Anthidona. The locals call the area “Soros”, which means “bunch”, possibly due to the bunch of soil required for the construction of the tomb. 69
