έξω από τη Χαλκίδα | An open-
air market in Artaki, at short
distance from Chalkida
This is not by chance, as it is a blessed land that combines
mountain, sea, vineyards, valleys... Some of its popular
products are the Kymi figs (a products with a protected
designation of origin), as well as amygdalota (almond
cookies), Rovies olives, Dirfys mushrooms and the fragrant
herbs, the premium wines, the fine honey, the types of cheese
and meat of South Evia. The place has also exceptional
traditional recipes, like the stuffed goat meat roasted in a
casserole in Karystos, the pies in Psachna, the baklava from
Kymi, tarhana with smoked pork, pasta with hot butter and
myzithra cheese, dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves with minced
meat), rooster with “gogilies” pasta, of course, all sorts of
fish, shells and seafood that have made Chalkida (mainly)
popular to every part of Greece, the famous red mullet fished
in Karystos Cove, while the squid from the Aegean coasts
are also popular. The differences are mostly found among
North, Central and South Evia, and you will realise it from the
first moment, if you visit Chalkida and from there you make a
trip to some of the villages of North and South Evia.
