KAMARES / THE ARCHES The Roman aqueduct, also known as “Kamares”, is located in the northern exit of Chalkida, on the regional road. In a first stage, this work was constructed by the Romans for the water supply of the town. In the second stage, it was completed by the Venetians, and is still preserved in an excellent condition. 12 intact arches and 3 columns without arches are saved. The scenery is impressive and will attract your attention if you pass by this place, especially in the evening hours, when the structure is illuminated. Note: In this area there was a settlement from the Paleolithic Area until the Geometric, the Classical and the Roman area. Moreover, in Dokos settlement (about 3.5 km from Chalkida) you will find 8 more arches along the Chalkida-Dokos road, which are part of the same aqueduct. 27
