It is housed in the premises of
“Arethousa S.A.” distillery. It is an
industrial building, dating from the
early 20th century that stopped op-
erating for good in 1980. It is also a
declared cultural heritage site and an
examples of the important industrial
activity in the town during the previ-
ous century. It opened its doors to
the public as a museum space in the
beginning of 2016. The museum’s
permanent collection concerns the
past of Evia and Skiros from the pre-
historic years until the establishment
of the Greek state Entrance is free.
THE LEGENDARY VENETIAN
FORTRESS THAT DOESN’T EXIST
ANYMORE...
Until 1890, opposite Karababa Fortress on
the side of Evia, there used to be the earlier
and more powerful Venetian fortress of
Chalkida (called “Negroponte” by the
Francs and “Egriboz” by the Turks) that
protected the town for many centuries
and despite the hard sieges it never
became a Turkish property. Probably it
was built in the 15th century. However,
this fortress that used to protect the
town, was unfortunately destroyed by
Greeks (!) in 1890, under the mayoraltyn
of Iraklis Gazepis and the premiership of
Trikoupis, while its building materials were
used for the construction of the platform
(“Kripidoma”) at the beach! It is also said
that the price of the rubble was estimated
to be as low as 2.7 drachmas/cc so that
the payment of the contractor was also
possible. The rumours about this ruinous
decision are numerous and unclear.
The result is that the historic fortress
disappeared without reason and Chalkida
lost the opportunity to become the most
picturesque town in Greece.
