stone structure, dating from the middle of
10th century B.D.. Under the floor of this
structure, that possibly was the residence
of a ruler, a double sovereign entombment
of a man and a woman was found. In fact,
the man’s funerary garment is the most
ancient garment found in the Helladic area
until today (1.100 B.D.), maybe even in the
whole world! 57 graves and 16 cremations
have been revealed. It is impressive that the
customs of entombment and cremation of
the dead co-exist. The cemetery of Toumba
is also characterised by the glory and the
wealth of the findings (gold jewellery,
luxury Oriental items, copper-ware and
vessels, etc.). This proves the prosperity and
the high cultural level of the inhabitants,
as well as the longtime contacts with
Oriental countries. The archaeological
study in Lefkanti showcased the important
offer of the residents of the Lelantine Plain
between the 10th and the 9th century
B.D., especially in the spiritual and financial
development of new Greece in the historical
ages. The findings from the area are of major
significance for the visitors
in order to be introduced into the civilisation
of the 1st millenium B.D. that
is considered as a “dark” period. Today,
the visitor can admire the findings in
the Eretria Museum and the National
Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Δίδυμοι Ενετικοί Πύργοι
Ανάμεσα στα χωριά Φύλλα και Μύτικας, πολύ κοντά από τη Χαλκίδα, θα δείτε 2 πύργους τον
έναν κοντά στον άλλον. Πρόκειται για ενετικά κτίσματα του 15ου αιώνα σωζόμενα σε σχετικά
καλή κατάσταση. Βρίσκονται πάνω σε ένα βραχώδες αλλά ομαλό ύψωμα με 2 κορυφές, από
τη βάση του οποίου περνά ο ποταμός Λήλαντας. Εκτός των άλλων, ο σκοπός ήταν να ελέγχε-
ται ο ποταμός από τους πύργους και να ασφαλίζονται τα νερά του, για την καλύτερη ύδρευση
της Χαλκίδας και το πότισμα του κάμπου. Οι πηγές αναφέρουν ότι το 1429 σε έναν από τους
δύο πύργους πιθανότατα κατοικούσε ο ποταμάρχης, δηλαδή, ένας Βενετός αξιωματούχος
που επιτηρούσε τη ροή του ποταμού, την άρδευση των αγρών και την συντήρηση του υδρο-
δοτικού συστήματος της Χαλκίδας. Επίσης, στους πύργους έβρισκαν καταφύγιο οι ντόπιοι σε
περίπτωση ληστρικών, πειρατικών ή άλλων εχθρικών επιδρομών.
Twin Venetian Towers Between Fylla and Mitikas villages, very close to Chalkida, you
will find 2 towers close to each other. They are Venetial structures dating from the 15th
century preserved in relatively good condition. The are located on a rocky yet even
mound with 2 tops, through the base of which goes Liladas river. Among other reasons,
the structure was built for the control of the area and protect the waters of the river
for the better water supply of Chalkida and the watering of the valley. According to
historical sources, in 1942 one of the two towers was inhabited by a British officer that
supervised the river flow, the irrigation of the fields and the preservation of the water
supply system in Chalkida. Moreover, the towers offered shelter to locals in case of
thieving, pirate or other rival raids.
Πύργος Βασιλικού
Στο Βασιλικό Εύβοιας (9 περίπου χλμ. από
τη Χαλκίδα) κοντά στο κέντρο του χωριού
και κοντά στις όχθες του ποταμού Λήλα, σε
στρατηγική θέση δεσπόζει ένας ογκώδης
τετράγωνος πύργος από τους μεγαλύτε-
ρους της Εύβοιας, ο Πύργος του Βασιλικού.

Πρόκειται για ένα τετράγωνο Ενετικό αμυ-
ντικό έργο των αρχών του 13ου αιώνα,
με μήκος 8,20μ. και ύψος 17,5μ. ως και τις
επάλξεις. Είναι ένας από τους 55 Ενετικούς
Πύργους της Εύβοιας, και ένας από τους
καλύτερα σωζόμενους.
