KERAMIKOS - GAZI
THE COOL REGION
Δυτικά της Πειραιώς απλώνεται η «συνοικία της διασκέδασης», το Γκάζι. Το όνοµά του
παραπέµπει στο εργοστάσιο φωταερίου που λειτουργούσε από το 1862 έως το 1984 και
σήµερα στεγάζει την Τεχνόπολη του Δήµου Αθηναίων, έναν σηµαντικό πολιτιστικό πολυχώρο.
Στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα δεν είχε καθόλου καλή φήµη, καθώς ήταν γεµάτη µε οίκους ανοχής.
Σταδιακά εµφανίστηκαν λίγα «ψαγµένα» µαγαζιά, τα οποία αρχικά ανακάλυψε πρώτη η gay αθηναϊκή
κοινότητα, ώσπου από τα τέλη του 1990 και κυρίως µε την άφιξη του σταθµού του µετρό
«Κεραµεικός» (το 2007), το Γκάζι γέµισε cafés, bars, µεζεδοπωλεία αλλά και live σκηνές.
Gazi, the “entertainment district” spreads out west of Pireos Str.! Its name is reminiscent of the
gas factory which used to operate in the area from 1862 until 1984 and today it houses the
Technopolis City of Athens, a very important cultural multi-purpose venue. In the beginning of
the 20th century it was a particularly notorious district, since it was full of brothels. After a while,
some “cool” places opened up which were initially discovered by the Athenian gay community,
until the end of the 1990’s, mainly with the arrival of “Keramikos” metro station (in 2007). This is
when Gazi was swarmed with cafes, bars, clubs, restaurants, meze taverns as well as live stages,
and the district became a point of reference.
