ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΆΚΙ
Το σηµείο της πόλης που δε κοιµάται ποτέ και αποτελεί ένα απίθανο µείγµα ρυθµών
και πολιτισµών. Στην καρδιά του Αθηναϊκού κέντρου και υπό το επιβλητικό «βλέµµα»
της Ακρόπολης, χιλιάδες κόσµου το επιλέγουν για φαγητό, shopping και ανελέητο
χάζι. Γειτονιά πάντα ζωντανή και πολύβουη, είναι ταυτισµένη µε τα παλαιοπωλεία
και το παζάρι, το περίφηµο «γιουσουρούµ». Ξεχωρίζουν η οδός Αδριανού, µε τα
µεζεδοπωλεία και τα cafés της, η Ηφαίστου και η Πανδρόσου, µε τα είδη λαϊκής τέχνης
και τα souvenirs. Λίγα µέτρα από τον ηλεκτρικό, ντόπιοι και τουρίστες πιάνουν σειρά
στα.. διάσηµα σουβλατζίδικα υπό τις µελωδίες πλανόδιων µουσικών.
MONASTIRAKI The spot of the city that never sleeps, an amazing mixture of beats
and cultures. In the heart of the Athenian center and under the imposing “gaze” of
the Acropolis, thousands of people choose it for food, shopping and merciless lazing
about. A neighborhood that is always alive and buzzing, identified with the antique
shops and the bazaar, the so-called “yusurum” (flea market). Streets that stand out
are Adrianou with its meze taverns and cafés, and Ifaistou and Pandrossou, with folk
art goods and souvenirs. A few meters away from the station, locals and tourists wait
their turn for the… famous souvlakia, by the melodies of street musicians.
ΠΛΑΤΕΊΑ ΑΒΗΣΣΥΝΊΑΣ
Παρελθόν και παρόν στήνουν εδώ ένα αρµονικό γαϊτανάκι. Στην ένδοξη γωνιά
της πόλης, το Μοναστηράκι, «σφηνωµένo» κάπου µεταξύ Ερµού και Ηφαίστου, ο
χρόνος στην πλακόστρωτη πλατεία λες και έχει σταµατήσει. Με σήµα κατατεθέν
της τα παλαιοπωλεία µε εµπόρευµα από άλλες εποχές, λένε πως πήρε το όνοµά της
όταν µοιράστηκε εδώ στους Έλληνες πρόσφυγες της Μικράς Ασίας η βοήθεια που
είχε στείλει ο αυτοκράτορας της Αβησσυνίας (Αιθιοπίας) επειδή εδώ κατοικούσαν
από πολύ παλιά Αιθίοπες. Κάτω από τον αθηναϊκό ουρανό, στήνεται κάθε Κυριακή
ένα αρχοντικό παζάρι µε όλων των λογιών τα ξεχασµένα αντικείµενα ενώ αποτελεί
αγαπηµένη περατζάδα για ντόπιους και τουρίστες.
AVISSINIAS SQUARE Here past and present set a harmonious maypole. In a
glorious corner of the city, Monastiraki, stuck somewhere between Ermou and Ifaistou,
time seems to have stopped in this paved square. With antique shops that trade
objects from other times as a trade mark, it is said that it took its name when the help
sent by the emperor of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) was distributed here to the Greek refugees
from Asia Minor, because Ethiopians used to live here since a long time ago. Under the
Athenian sky every Sunday a majestic bazaar is being held, with all kinds of forgotten
items, while it’s a favorite pass for locals and tourists.
