MONASTERY OF SPILIA The Monastery of Panaghia Spileotissa , dedicated to the Zoodochos Pigi (“ Life-giving Spirng ”), is located at the top of a steep rock at an altitude of 900 meters and is a top religious , cultural and historical sight . It stands majestically between hillsides with firs , at the awe-inspiring Agrafa mountain range , close to Kabouriana village and looks as if it is hanging from the rock , creating a breathtaking image . The views from the Monastery are exceptional . Two temples stand out inside the Monastery . The smaller one is dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God and is older , as it is believed to have been built in 1604 . The big temple (“ Katholiko ”) of Zoodochos Pigi was built in 1736 . At the foundations of the Monastery there is the holy cave where , according to the tradition , the sacred icon of Virgin Mary was found after she was revealed . In addition , in the Monastery there are also the relics of many Saints . Lastly , it is also a site of major historical importance , as it played a crucial role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 . In 1867 , the seat of the revolutionary government was in the Holy Monastery of Spilia .
