MARATHOS The balcony of Achelous . Marathos is the first village of the of Acheloos that you will meet as you travel from Karditsa to South Argithea . The village is built at an altitude of about 650 meters , on the northwest edge of Karditsa region . Until 1928 it was known as “ Arachovitsa ” and was the seat of the region . However , in the recent years , it was named Marathos from the famous herb ( marathos means fennel ) that grows in abundance in the mountains of the area . Among the top sights of the village stand out the cobbled square , a relaxing oasis for the traveler , and of course , the church of St . Triada with the interesting architecture . Marathos is surrounded by two settlements , Marathos II ( also known as Marathos Stefaniadas , as it was named until 1961 ), built at an altitude of about 800 meters , and Melanydro ( or Bouziariko , as it was known until 1961 ), built near Achelous river , at an altitude of 480 meters .
