Προφήτης Ηλίας | Prophet Elias
ARGYRI The extreme edge of Argithea . Argyri is the last village on the southwestern edge of Karditsa region , at the south “ Mirmitzala ” peak of Pindus . It is an ancient village , known with its current name even during the period before the Greek War of Independence of 1821 . It borders Evrytania and Aetolia-Acarnania regions . It consists of many settlements that are scattered at an altitude of 850 meters across the brinks of Achelous river at about 300 meters . The church of Prophet Elias , the biggest part of which is built inside a cave , stands out among the sights of the area . In addition , the two traditional watermills – the one still in operation- preserved in the village and the whirlpool at Platania creek are of particular interest . It is worth mentioning that the watermill of Argyri was recently restored . On the bed of Platania creek , a tributary of Achelous , a small hydro-electric plant was constructed to deploy the rainfalls in the river for energy purposes . Argyri features two settlements , Makrykambos ( formerly named Prava ) at an altitude of 500 meters and Megali Petra ( known as Gralista until 1961 ) at an altitude of 640 meters . The visitor will find two guest houses , a tavern and a traditional café in the main settlement of the village . The parochial temple ( recently renovated ) is dedicated to St . Nikolaos . There are also chapels , while the temple of Prophet Elias is built half under the rock . According to the tradition , this is where the icon of the Prophet was found . It celebrates on July 20 , when the great feast of the village also takes place . After the exultant mass held inside the temple on the mountain , a traditional feast is organised in the main settlement of the village . In Klideres , 3 km from the centre of the village , you will find a restored watermill that is still working .
