KATAFYLLI It is located in South Pindus , on the south side of “ Mirmitzala ” peak at the borders of Karditsa and Arta regions . In the past , until 1930 , the village was named Selipiana , a name originating from the ancient King Selipos , Many historical treasures seem to be buried even under the ground of the village , although important findings discovered by the locals , like ancient jars , oil lamps , coins , etc ., have already been delivered to the National Archaeological Museum . The visitors can see , making a short walk around the area , remnants of the walls of the town , built during the Hellenistic period , as well as relics from houses , tombs and the alleged space of the Palace of Selipos . It consists of many settlements that are scattered from an altitude of 1000 meters until the brinks of Achelous at about 300 meters . Katafylli is surrounded by settlements located in the wider area , like Kellaria at an altitude of 680 meters , Prava and Sykia at an altitude of 440 meters , Taxiarchis and Ardanavo at an altitude of 370 meters . In 1,000 meters , you will find an archaeological site , where many important items and coins were found . The village features two remarkable churches and many chapels . The parochial temple is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ and built in 1888 . It has a carved wooden altarpiece and exceptional acoustics , while it organises a traditional feast on August 6 after the celebratory mass . The second church is dedicated to St . Kiriaki and built at the position of an old monastery of the 17th century at Kellaria and celebrates on July 7 . This day , the holy mass is followed by a traditional feast . From the chapel of Prophet Elias the pilgrim can enjoy the panoramic views of the mountains of Evrytania , Aetolia- Acarnania and Tzoumerka in Epirus . Keep in mind that the access is hard , as uphill hiking is necessary . Close to Ardanovo settlement , there is a five-arched impressive stone bridge , connecting Katafylli with Aetolia-Acarnania region .
