ARGITHEA ( KNISOVO ) Previously called “ Knisovo ”, it gave its name to the wider region of Argithea , is built at an altitude that ranges from 930 meters in the centre of the village to 1.100 meters on the slopes , where the most houses have been constructed . The old stone houses with the timbers and the old wooden lintels steal the scene . Covered in plane trees along the river and firs on the slopes , the landscape is idyllic . It is surrounded by the Kanales , Karavoyla and Kafia massive mountains , with their peaks being over 1.750 meters . It is ideal for mountaineering and walking , as the E4 international trails passes though the village . The center of the village is traversed by Platanias river , filled with water all year round , while in Kanala location stands a singlearched bridge . Along the entire river ( in Argithea ) there is a cobbled pathway starting from the whirlpool , passing from the watermill and leafing to the retreat park of the village . In the ancient years , it was the capital of Athamania and is a place of particular historical and archaeological importance . Just 2km west of the village , at “ Ellinika ”, on the way to ancient Gomfi ( Mouzaki ), important archaeological findings were revealed after excavations , and two cemeteries . The 2,30-metertall grave monument is of major importance for the grave architecture of the area . Today , these important findings are kept in the Museum of Volos . Argithea has also many churches and its main festival is held on July 20 .
