SHORT TRIP
LAKE PLASTIRA : A TOP EXPERIENCE It is impossible to visit Argithea without combining the area with a trip to lake Plastira , the most beautiful reservoir in Greece . Lake Plastira is about 39 km away from Argithea and you can go there by car in 50 minutes . Actually , if you follow the dirt road of the route Lake Plastira-Fylakti- Petrilo , the distance is much shorter . It is a man-made heaven throughout the year . Its official name is lake Tavropos , since it was created in 1959 at the place where Tavropos river passed in the ancient times , meeting Achelous in the south , after the construction of the dam on its south edge at the place where the river starts . The idea for its creation belongs to the commissioned officer and politician Nikolaos Plastiras , who , in 1935 visited his birthplace and saw that disastrous floods had occurred in the area and Macedonia due to the continuous rainfalls . As he was looking at the area , he is reported to have said “ one day a lake will be created here ”, hence the widely known name , lake Plastira . The lake is surrounded by an idyllic landscape of unrivalled natural beauty stealing the scene from the first moment you behold it . It is often characterised as “ Little Switzerland ” and not by chance . Alpine mountain peaks , sometimes snowy and sometimes covered in green , impetuous torrents “ flirting ” with the beautiful banks , manifold fjords and a small , verdant islet and a spruce mantle reflected in the turquoise waters . Embraced by a few villages , lakeside or mountainous offering amazing views of the lake , you have the perfect postcard-like setting .
