LET’S TAKE A WALK...
Η Αράχωβα δεν έγινε τυχαία ένας από τους πιο δηµοφιλείς
προορισµούς, καθώς είναι ένας τόπος ευνοηµένος από
την ιστορία. Οι αρχαιολογικές ανασκαφές συνδέουν την
Αράχωβα µε την οµηρική πόλη Ανεµώρεια, στους πρόπο-
δες του Παρνασσού, ενώ για το σηµερινό της όνοµα δεν
υπάρχει επίσηµη εκδοχή. Στα χρόνια της Eπανάστασης ήταν
ήδη γνωστή ως «Ράχωβα», ονοµασία που, σύµφωνα µε
µια ερµηνεία, προέρχεται από τις αρχαιοελληνικές λέξεις
«ράχις» και «ωβάς» και δηλώνει οικιστική ένωση. Κάποιοι
ιστορικοί θέλουν να προέρχεται από το «Οrechova»
(«orech+ova»), που στα σλάβικα σηµαίνει τόπος µε πολλές
καρυδιές. Τόσο η Αράχωβα όσο και η ευρύτερη περιοχή
ανήκαν στη Φωκίδα και εντάχθηκαν στα διοικητικά όρια της
Βοιωτίας, µε πρωτεύουσα τη Λιβαδειά, στις 6/7/1899. Ο
σηµερινός «καλλικρατικός» δήµος Αράχωβας, µε έδρα το
Δίστοµο, αποτελείται από τους πρώην δήµους Αραχώβης
και Διστόµου και την πρώην κοινότητα Αντίκυρας.

archaeological excavations have associated Arachova with the
Homeric town of Anemoria, at the foot of Mt. Parnassos, while
there is no official version to explain its present-day name. During
the Greek War of Independence it was known as “Rachova”, a
name which could possibly derive from the ancient greek words
“rachis” (hill) and “ovas”, which alludes to a settlement union. Some
historians have suggested that the name stems from “Orechova”
(orech+ova), which means a land with lots of walnut trees in Slavic.
Both Arachova and the wider region belonged to Fokida and joined
the administrative boundaries of Viotia, with Livadia capital, on
6/7/1899. The present-day municipality of Arachova consists of the
former municipalities of Arachova, Distomo and Antikyra. eritage
