In 1976 Escobar was at the peak of his rise. With a net worth of 30 billion, Escobar was the most powerful man of his time. Escobar was sent to prison, and the man was so powerful that he built his own prison and still walked out clean. However, Pablo may not have been successful alone. With the help of the CIA, Pablo Escobar became one of the richest men in the world, even making the Forbes list.
Sources show that companies Pablo invested in could not return money to Escobar without the CIA’s permission. The CIA let him get paid. Why you may ask? Because Escobar was so keen on making money, he hired private guerilla armies to kill communist armies that were taking his money. The CIA liked this.
During the Cold War, the U.S. government opposed communism at all cost, and since Pablo had been paying for the executions for communist, the CIA let him continue what he was doing.
After the cold war ended, things had died down with communism. The U.S. no longer opposed communism like it had. Due to the cold war ending, the U.S. no longer went to great lengths to prevent communism as they no longer had reason to do so. This meant that they no longer needed Pablo Escobarr.
The CIA allowed DEA agents and Columbian militia to take down Escobar once and for all. In 1993, Pablo had finally perished. After his termination, the Medellin cartel had been put to a stop.
The significance of this article is to seek out and recognize that our own government may do things they need for “the greater good.” But these choices impact the more than just Americans.
Marroquín, explains his “father worked for the CIA selling cocaine to finance the fight against Communism in Central America.”
