Upon Arrival
Expectations having been set as far as is
possible beforehand, the reality of arrival will
always be stressful; moving house is listed
amongst the top 3 most stressful life events,
and when this move is international the
impact is significantly greater.
If at all possible, it is preferable for the
family to be housed directly in their
selected residence. This will cut down on
compounding the ‘transfer stress’ by having
to stay first in temporary accommodation.
An early introduction to the school would be
positive, and even if closed for vacation, a site
visit might be possible. Many international
schools arrange a ‘buddy system’ in which
a newcomer is assigned a pal to assist them
integrate. If this has been set up beforehand,
they could possibly even meet before
school starts up. Especially if also from an
expat family, local children will be able to
relate their own experience of the move and
provide solidarity.
Settling In
Early integration is essential and sets the tone
for the following months and years. Introduce
the expat family to local resources that they
can draw on once their relocation assistance is
complete: expat groups and clubs, sports clubs,
online groups wherein they can broaden their
local contacts and find answers to everyday
questions. Provide them with lists of reputable
local suppliers for daily needs.
The concept is to equip the family for
independent living within the local expat
community once their relocation package has
been exhausted.
