We asked Tomomi Fujita of Santa Fe to answer our 10
questions.
1. Give us an overview of Japan as a destination.
Japan is situated in north-east Asia in between the North
Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. The area of Japan is
377,873 square kilometres, the equivalent of Germany
and Switzerland combined or slightly smaller than
California. Japan consists of four major islands and is
surrounded by more than 4,000 small islands.
The total population of Japan is over 128 million.
Most people reside in densely populated urban areas.
The population of the Tokyo metropolitan area and
its surroundings is the most densely populated, with
approximately 13 million people. The next largest city,
Yokohama, has a population of just over 3.5 million.
2. Which cities are the main destinations for
multinational investment and corporate
relocation?
The main expat destinations are definitely Tokyo and
Yokohama followed by Nagoya and Osaka.
3. Which sectors are these corporations from?
The majority of multinationals investing in Japan are from
the manufacturing industry, then we have heavy industry
and the IT sector.
