EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to Issue 2 of The Global Phoenix!
Firstly, a big Thank You to all of our readers who gave such positive feedback on
our re-launch edition! Our aim is to continue to supply informative, practical and
current information for global talent mobility professionals and a to be a forum for
knowledge interchange, inspiring Excellence!
Coinciding with the annual EuRA Congress, being held in Warsaw, Poland, we are extending our Global Focus
section to take an in-depth look at various European destinations. In line with the conference theme, ‘The Power
of Challenge’, we address various challenges faced in global talent mobility, and hear from industry leaders in
each country on how these challenges are being met with creative solutions.
In our ‘INDUSTRY FEATURES’ section we learn about managing cultural diversity, selecting assignment
management software and protecting ROI on repatriation:
With global teams working on cross-border projects now commonplace, it is essential that team leaders and
employers are equipped to address this potentially volatile reality. Stephen Branch & Binwa Sethi address the
challenge in ‘Building Cross-Cultural Competence in an Increasingly Global Workplace’.
Specialised software is playing an ever-growing role in global talent mobility management, however, the array
of management tool options can be both confusing and bewildering; Software Development Manager of
ECA International, Martin Ridgeway guides us through the maze with ‘15 Questions To Ask When Choosing
Assignment Management Software’.
What happens after an international assignment? Cross-cultural expert, Dean Foster examines the subject of
repatriation, the gravity and implications of which for both the assignee and employing corporation are all too
often overlooked; ‘Repatriation-Managing the Critical Factor for ROI on International Assignments’
Our ‘GLOBAL FOCUS’ is on Europe. Taking a Pan-European approach, we turn the spotlight on various
European countries located throughout the continent: Norway ( located in Northern Europe and a non-EU
country); Italy (Southern Europe) and Spain (Western Europe). We also have an additional feature on EuRA
conference venue for 2017, Poland.
We look at both the positive and negative impact EU membership has had on two of its newer member
countries, and learn where their economies and populations are placed in 2017: Hungary, one of the ten ‘Fifth
Wave’ countries that joined the EU in 2004 in ‘Hungary - 13 years later…’; and Romania, that joined together
with neighbouring Bulgaria three years afterwards in ‘Romania -
10 years on…’
Whilst several countries are clamoring to join the EU; the United
Kingdom is the first in EU history whose population have voted to
leave. Article 50 has been triggered and the wheels are now set in
motion. In an article from Fragomen UK, we examine the potential
impact of BREXIT in ‘Brexit and the Free Movement of People.’
Our ‘PROMOTING EXCELLENCE’ section looks at key skills for
our industry: An introduction to the art of public speaking (to be
continued in Issue 3) and Social Media Marketing.
We hope you enjoy Issue 2 of The Global Phoenix!
