BE AWARE – TAKE CARE
As in all developing countries , Expatriates must be aware not to call undue attention to themselves and to move cautiously when out and about . Petty theft abounds .
Nigeria poses far greater threats than petty theft however , kidnapping and assault are rampant . It remains a high risk destination and Corporate and Expatriates alike must be aware of essential safety precautions :
• Expatriate dwellings generally provide 24 / 7 security surveillance – if it is not provided by the landlord it MUST be sourced from a security company
• Chose a supplier that is well known and has the capability to provide also replacement cover for guards during absences – Security Companies that service large organisations such as banks are always a good option
• Many Multinationals have their own rigorous security requirements and will inspect a property prior to lease signing – Expatriates are urged to be patient during this process – remember it is for your family ’ s safety and protection !
• Remain vigilant as to child safety : Many Expatriates have driver service to accompany their children to school – and International Schools require prior appointment before look-see visits as part of their security screening process . Kidnapping is common in this country and it is never worth running the risk
