WELCOME to the re-launch edition of ‘ The Global Phoenix ’! – back with a new look and new focus for 2017 !
Any New Year is inevitably a time for contemplation , a time to enjoy the satisfaction of our achievements , and to establish goals and targets for the future , both on a personal level and for our companies and our industry . The origin of January 1st being celebrated to hail in the New Year dates back to 45 BC when Julius Caesar of ancient Rome declared it to be the start of the year within the Julian calendar . Our modern day Gregorian calendar , which was endorsed by Pope Gregory XIII in the 1500s , adheres to the same tradition .
The month of January has retained its name from ancient Roman times , being derived from that of Janus , the god of gateways and beginnings . Janus had two faces , one that looked behind and one ahead , and at the start of Janus ’ month , the Romans used to make him promises about what they would achieve during the forthcoming year – so the tradition of looking back over the past year and forward to the next with resolutions predates our C21st by thousands of years !
