Art off the beaten track Until 25th January After a career as a writer and creative director in Munich, the talented artist Romana Brunnauer came to Lanzarote in 2005 and devoted herself to painting full time. Some of the results of that devotion can be seen this month at the small Galeria de Arte ENMALA, the tiny gallery located in the northern town of Mala, as Romana presents the second part of her exhibition. Titled “Who Are You, Friend? – Plato in the 21st Century”, Brunnauer´s abstract acrylic works attempt to draw parallels between the Greek philosopher Plato’s famous allegory of The Cave, - a place in which we never see reality, but merely flickering shadows on the walls that we believe are reality– and modern social media. The Galeria ENMALA is a little off the beaten track, located on C/ Lomo de la Cruz in Mala, so check Facebook for a map before setting out. The exhibition is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm until January 25th. Daring young woman Carolina Bustamente Circus time 2nd - 4th January Lanzarote hasn´t hosted a big top circus for a few years now, which means that the MalabHaria festival in January will be all the more welcome for children of all ages who love acrobatics and sheer spectacle. Circuses are changing fast, and the cages of mangy, depressed elephants and lions that used to come to Lanzarote are hopefully now a thing of the past. The backlash against animal circuses has also meant that human performers have become ever more innovative and exciting. But little known to many, even on Lanzarote, the northern town of Haria has held a circus festival every year, which takes places in the days between New Year´s Day and three Kings Day on the 5th. This year is no different, and on 2nd. 3rd and 4th of January, Haria will set up a big top and host a variety of circus performers, with trapeze artists, high-wire walkers, acrobats and, of course clowns – all presented by ringmaster Capitán Maravilla. Performers will include Circo Vaivén, Zen del Sur and the daring trapeze artist Carolina Bustamente from Spain, Toto the juggler from Chile, the Argentinian monocyclist Santimbanqui, Israeli Frisbee juggler Ayal Benin and the British tightrope walker Alfa Marks. The gala opening will be at 8.30 on 2nd Jan; there´ll be individual performances at 12.30, 5.30 and 8.30 on the 3rd and a finale at 8.30 pm on the 4th. Go to www.malbharia.com for full programme.
