PLAYLIST by Phil Marriott from Gaydio. British Indie trio, London
Grammar had a phenomenal year in 2013. The trend looks set to continue as
they unleash brooding anthem, Hey Now with a truly spellbinding remix from
Arty. Electro pop kids, The Good Natured were dropped last year by their
record label, a crazy concept in itself, but the phoenix rises from the flames under the guise of
Lovestarrs; their fruity debut, Get Your Sex On comes over like Kim Wilde at an afterhours 90’s rave. Kiss The Panther are a terrific new British synth pop duo comprising of
Steven Kimber and Andrew Bernhard - the brains behind top production guise,
Bitrocka. Your Voice is New Romanticism for the modern age, and it’s utterly
brilliant. Pop princess Kylie, has thankfully ditched the bubblegum pop for Into
The Blue which is still arms-in-the-air melodic and uplifting, but chooses the
Confide In Me elegance in bringing us something more refined. The haunting
ballads on Halcyon were infinitely more charming than the pounding pace of
Goodness Gracious - but Ellie Goulding’s career just gets sturdier as she
matures. Folk singer, and Vin’s Night In host, Vin Goodwin takes on electronica in
the form of Never Let Go. OMD-style electronic hooks and heartfelt sentiments
make this one to watch. Dark Horse by Katy Perry is quite possibly the most
unusual single she’s released, it’s almost the opposite of Unconditionally. It’s sinister,
slow-burning, clever and addictive. Could have done without the pointless rap from
Juicy J, though. More Calvin than Wu-Tang Clan, Elliot Gleave has ditched the rapping
for a fresh new EDM sound on Kids Again. A new Example album is scheduled for
June. Already classed as ‘the new wonder of EDM’, the sickeningly youthful DJ/producer,
Martin Garrix collaborates with Jay Hardway and follows up his No.1, Animals with the
equally rousing, Wizard. Boy George has promised me that there are some big remixes of
Feel The Vibration to come later this Spring. The closing track from his recent, critically
acclaimed album, “This Is What I Do”, is set to go off in the clubs. ∎
